  • Carlos' picture book Emergency Quarters (2024) is based on his short story, which was a finalist in The New York Times Metropolitan Diary's "Best of the Year."
  • The thing Carlos is most proud of is being born and raised in Queens, New York—aka the food capital of the world's capital.
  • He's an unapologetic lover of empanadas, pastelitos, and pretty much anything where meat gets a warm, carb-filled hug.

Experience

Carlos Matias is a second-generation Dominican writer whose work explores the intersection of food and culture, with a special focus on the communities and traditions that shape what we eat. His writing has been featured in The New York Times, Taste, Bon Appétit, The Kitchn, and more. He got his start at Edible Bronx, where he quite literally ate his way through the borough — his MetroCard may have taken a hit, but his appetite never did.

Education

Carlos holds a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from St. John's University and a master's in Branding and Integrated Communications from City College.
