5 Fast Food Menu Items That Rival Sit-Down Chains In 2026

Add The Takeout on Google:

It's not controversial to say that fast food restaurants often fall short of full-service, sit-down restaurants in terms of taste and overall quality. After all, that's often considered the trade-off for enjoying the quick, inexpensive products that fast food chains provide. However, there are exceptions to everything, and the quality of fast food products is no different. In fact, there are a handful of fast food items out there that are as good as, if not better than, their sit-down restaurant counterparts. And this goes beyond fountain drinks (which always taste better at fast food restaurants).

Now, we aren't necessarily saying that even the best cheeseburger from a fast food restaurant has as high a quality as a premium wagyu burger from a Michelin-starred eatery. However, the entries on this list are all tasty enough to be someone's first pick despite their distinction as meager fast food menu items. Admittedly, some of these chains are technically considered fast casual restaurants rather than true fast food joints, but that doesn't make the fact that they can compare to full-fledged restaurants any less impressive.

Culver's Cheeseburgers

We're starting things off with the one item that many would say fast food restaurants have down pat: a cheeseburger. However, Culver's seems to have mastered the art of the cheeseburger more than any other chain. While we didn't feature Culver's on our list of restaurants with the highest and lowest quality fast food burgers, there's no denying the fact that Culver's uses high-quality beef and fresh ingredients to make a juicy, delectable burger that is very hard to compete with.

Even celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern has gone to bat for Culver's burgers in the past, touting just how fresh and authentic the burgers truly are. "There's no frozen meat ... ," Zimmern said in a 2022 "Hot Ones" interview. "It's all fresh. Tomatoes come in there, and they are cut by someone. Lettuce comes in there whole, and it is cut by someone ... I'm there for the burger, and it tastes like beef."

Furthermore, while we could spend all day praising Culver's signature burger, the ButterBurger, it's not the only incredible burger on the menu. The fast food restaurant also sells specialty burgers that are typically heavy hitters in their own right. Whether it's the now-iconic CurderBurger or one of the many pub burgers the chain rolls out, Culver's consistently provides flavorful, unique burgers that are hard to beat, even at solid full-service restaurants.

Five Guys French Fries

While many believe that it's Five Guys' burgers that are capable of rivaling those at sit-down restaurants (and we're not going to argue against that), it's the chain's french fries that are head and shoulders above the rest. A big reason for this french fry supremacy comes down to the Virginia-based chain's meticulous process to make the side dish as delicious as possible. Five Guys primarily sources its russet Burbank potatoes from Idaho, only shifting to russet Norkotah potatoes sourced from Washington for two months of the year. This ensures the potatoes the chain uses are always in their prime, never wavering in terms of taste or texture. From there, Five Guys fries its potatoes in peanut oil rather than vegetable oil, as it is considered the best one could use for the job.

These methods all come together to create french fries that taste fresh, flavorful, and generally enticing. While fans of crispy fries might not like Five Guys' uniquely soft and fluffy texture, those characteristics arguably make them more delicious than other restaurants. In fact, while you can certainly find full-service restaurants with high-end, at times even gourmet fries, we would still argue that it's hard to beat a good order of Five Guys fries.

Portillo's Italian Beef Sandwich

As someone born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Portillo's is a fast-casual chain that I hold near and dear to my heart. So, while this may sound quite biased, there are very few full-service restaurants that make a sandwich as good as Portillo's iconic Italian beef sandwiches. The chain stacks slow-roasted beef, giardiniera, and sweet peppers on a large roll of Turano French bread to make an incredibly savory and satiating sandwich. While many argue over which Italian beef in Chicago is the best, Portillo's is able to deliver one of the strongest versions of the sandwich while also doing it quickly, consistently, and at many different locations across the Midwest and beyond.

It's important to note that there aren't many sit-down restaurants serving the classic Chicago dish — the Italian beef was a dish that originated as an inexpensive food for Italian stockyard workers in the early 20th century, after all. However, regardless of what style of sandwich you compare it to, Portillo's Italian beef has both the size and overall flavor to compete with just about any entree at your favorite full-service restaurant. After all, there's a good reason the Italian beef is among the most beloved dishes in the state of Illinois.

Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers

Chicken fingers are among the handful of dishes that fast food chains tend to do incredibly well. So it should come as no surprise that we believe Raising Cane's chicken fingers are as good as the fried chicken dishes you'll find at most traditional sit-down restaurants. Here at The Takeout, we touted Raising Cane's as the best fast-food chicken fingers on the market, beating out many beloved chains. One could argue that the fast-paced nature of a fast food kitchen is what makes the Raising Cane's chicken so good, as the food is typically served piping hot right out of the fryer — a factor that often adds quite a lot to the chicken's overall taste.

Nevertheless, what truly sets Raising Cane's apart is how crunchy and juicy each tender is. To make this the case, Cane's marinates each of its chicken fingers before cooking them, making the meat much softer and juicier in the process. While many believe that this marinade features a buttermilk base alongside a handful of spices and seasonings, nobody knows for sure how the chicken is prepared. Nevertheless, the poultry is then coated in a batter and fried in soy, canola, and/or deep-frying oil to get the unforgettable crisp that fans of the chain know and love. Combine this with the ultra-flavorful Cane's sauce that comes with every order of the chain's chicken fingers, and you get one of the best versions of the dish you can find practically anywhere.

Wendy's Chili

Last but certainly not least, we have this writer's absolute favorite fast food item in the form of Wendy's chili. An ever-present fixture of American cuisine, chili can be found at sit-down restaurants all across the country, but Wendy's rendition of the dish is bursting with flavor, with a savory base that has a mild, spicy tang to it that really sets it apart from restaurant versions. These qualities are enhanced with the use of Wendy's Hot Chili Seasoning Sauce, but even without the condiment's help, the way Wendy's brings together its meat, vegetables, and chili beans to create a tasty and well-synchronized stew is legitimately impressive.

And don't take our word for it; many online have been routinely shocked by how good Wendy's chili is, even despite Wendy's use of leftover burger meat in the stew's recipe. Plus, Wendy's chili has done quite well at contests. So, if you want chili that's as delicious as it is quick and easy to purchase, visiting the Wendy's drive-thru and ordering a bowl is your best bet.
