Fast Food Chains That Customers Say Are Quickly Losing Quality In 2026

Add The Takeout on Google:

There are many levels in dining out. Fine and casual dining both have their pros and cons and serve a purpose for customers. Fast food chains may be perceived to be at the bottom of the dining ladder, but they, too, serve a purpose. When you need to grab a quick meal, are on a tight budget, or just craving a good burger or tasty pizza, fast food is the way to go. Just because it's quick and less expensive, doesn't necessarily mean fast food is low quality. Many chains are loved by fans for their delicious meals. However, there are some that customers feel have dropped in food quality in 2026.

Nobody knows how good a chain's food is better than those who regularly patronize the business. If you like fast food, you surely want to know which places you may want to avoid. We informed you of which fast food chains serve the highest and lowest quality burgers. Now, through the comments of customers on social media, we have found 11 fast food chains that have dipped in quality in 2026. Naturally, your results may vary, but it's good to know which restaurants' food has diminished in the eyes of patrons.

Panera Bread

Panera Bread is unique among fast food chains. Along with your meal, you get a choice of chips, an apple, or, the most popular choice, a piece of French bread. With soups, sandwiches, and its "You Pick Two" option, Panera has secured a place in the crowded fast food field. Unfortunately, the chain has earned a place on our list as well. We provided the recap of Panera's downfall you need, and now follow up on the diminished quality here.

Customers have taken to Reddit to express concerns about the chain's quality. One diner asked, "Lately I've noticed that Panera's quality is going downhill. Does anyone else notice this??" They went on to detail the issues. "First, the recipe to the dressings changed — everything is becoming 'reformulated' but it seems like things are being switched out for cheaper alternatives ... The croutons are cardboard and the dressing is gross. Also the sandwiches are tiny, and I just ordered the lasagna soup and it legit looks like SLOP." Other Redditors concurred, agreeing with the comments of the thread creator.

In another Reddit thread in which a poster asked which fast food places have declined the most in quality, a Redditor chimed right in, calling out Panera. Other customers agreed. You may want to proceed with caution when choosing to dine at Panera Bread.

KFC

The chain formerly know as Kentucky Fried Chicken has been around a long time, and has been mostly successful. Although there are competing chicken chains, KFC has managed to stay near the top of the heap. The colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices is loved by many fast food fans. Things have changed significantly from what it was like to eat at KFC in 1969. Over the years, the menu expanded from buckets of chicken to include wraps, sandwiches, bowls, and other ways to serve chicken. Sadly, KFC is another chain that customers believe is declining in the quality of its food.

In the thread mentioned earlier, asking which fast food places have dropped in quality, a Redditor responded with, "KFC for sure ... t's all just gristle & grease that I wouldn't even feed my dogs." That is quite a harsh assessment. In a thread on the Fast Food subreddit, the comments were equally tough, with the Redditor who created it saying, "I dunno how my local KFC stays in business." Another dissatisfied customer related a story, "Just bought a 3-piece tender box. ($3 via T-Mobile perk). The tenders were hard and dry. The breading itself even was like biting/chewing on a piece of leather." Other Redditors concurred, expressing their dismay with the state of quality at the colonel's place.

McDonald's

The golden arches are one of the most iconic and recognizable sights in the world of fast food. However, customers have taken issue with McDonald's. Fast food fans are up in arms over the chain's lastest change of showing commercials on the drive-through menu boards. There are, however, more problems than that. McDonald's has been flagged as declining in quality.

In a thread in which the creator asks which fast food chains are using cheaper ingredients, a Redditor responded with several complaints. "I think it's safe to say that McDonald's food quality has seriously deteriorated over the past two decades or so. Not just the quality, but the value of the meal too, I saw a graph showing the effects of inflation on the US dollar compared to the price of a burger at McDonald's, and you can see they've jacked prices way up." Another Redditor created a thread titled, "I truly don't think I can eat at McDonald's again." The dissatisfied diner then went on to detail issues with the Filet-O-Fish, chickens nuggets, and burgers. They also felt the pricing with the poor quality diminished the value overall.

The downgrade in quality seems to be affecting the bottom line as well. An article in Forbes discusses how McDonald's stock price has dropped 29%, a significant number. The article criticizes the chain's plan to reverse the trend, which does not include improving quality.

Pizza Hut

Few casual foods reach the level of popularity of pizza. Most fans have their favorite local pizzerias, but there is still room for fast food chains. Pizza Hut is one of the oldest and biggest of these chains. There are restaurant locations all over the country, and the chain has been very successful throughout its history. People with happy memories of visits to PIzza Hut as children, now lament the decline in the chain's quality.

Once again, we turn to the Reddit thread asking which chain's have dropped in quality, and a Redditor had no trouble coming up with, "Pizza Hut ... easy." Another disgruntled customer agreed wholeheartedly. "I'm a bit of a pizza snob and there was a time I would say without hesitation that they were very very good but certainly not the case anymore." Another thread was filled with comments that also noticed reduced quality. One Redditor stated, "Pizza Hut isn't anywhere close to what it was before about 2002 or so...maybe not even then. 2006 Pizza Hut compared to 2026 is also a huge difference in a bad way...like it's almost not even edible even when it looks like it's made by someone who cares."

Subway

The king of sandwich chains is Subway. With more than 20,000 locations in the U.S., it's not a stretch to call the chain successful. With foot-long and six-inch subs of all kinds available on a variety of breads, Subway has served a huge number of sandwich fans. Two big changes are coming to Subway in 2026: The addition of Poppi prebiotic sodas and a shift to focusing on its international operations. Despite these optimistic moves, customers are finding a decline in quality in this chain as well.

A post on Facebook discusses the mixed reviews Subway is racking up. The post links to other Facebook users complaining posts, including this one: "Subways whole slogan is 'eat fresh' well maybe someone should show Milaca crew what fresh is last three times I've ordered from app bread is so hard you can't chew it veggies all soggy I guess I'll have to try Princeton from now on." One responder claimed to have gotten food poisoning from a Subway sandwich. This is certainly a sign of poor quality. Another Facebook user said, "Subway is awful these days. I never ever get the lettuce because it's almost always brown and they are very stingy with any of the toppings, including things like cucumbers or tomatoes, my goodness yeah I am not a fan anymore." Additionally, Trust Pilot shows a poor rating of 1.9 stars, based on more than 2,000 reviews. It seems clear that Subway is disappointing its customers.

Taco Bell

Mexican cuisine is popular and there are a number of fast food chains that serve it. Perhaps the best known, is Taco Bell. You may doubt its authenticity, but there is no doubting the number of fans it has. Now, the fact that Taco Bell is sitting here on our list tells you that there may be some quality issues.

A Reddit thread laments Taco Bell's "terrible menu," and a responder came back with, "They took a legitimately great and affordable fast food chain somewhat marketed to a younger demographic and turned it into a menu full of carnival food fueled by fomo with completely bloated prices." Many other Redditors complained of the new menu items not living up to the ones they replaced. Another thread on Reddit blames the "Live Más" campaign for ruining Taco Bell, specifically calling out the flavor of the quesadillas. "As I sit here and tear up over those grill marks, I ask myself when I will give up hope? Since 2012 I've been wondering when my quesadillas will have that signature flavor they used to have. But every time I get let down with a barely grilled wannabe quesadilla with unmelted cheese that tastes like a sad excuse for Taco Bell. I can still taste the original jalapeño sauce and chicken as I type this. I think this is the end for me guys. It's been real."

Jack in the Box

Born in California, Jack in the Box has been around a long time, and has had its ups and downs. Despite various acquisitions by larger companies, the chain is still alive today, serving a diverse menu that includes burgers, tacos, and breakfast items. Today, the chain with the smiling logo featuring its namesake toy faces customers who feel the quality has diminished, Hence, its place here on our list.

In fact, it has dropped to the point that our sister site, Tasting Table, placed it dead last in a ranking of 21 burger chains. There are plenty of unhappy customers to back the ranking up. In a Reddit thread on the aforementioned article, numerous responders had negative comments including this one: "The $1 tacos were my breaking point. I've love them since I started working there in 2006. But now it's just not worth it anymore. My go to meal for over a decade was four tacos with extra lettuce and extra cheese with seven jalapeños and a large Dr Pepper. On the app, They have removed the option to add anything extra to the tacos so it really put the nail in the coffin. Sad." Another Reddit thread is titled, "And the quality is terrible now...," in reference to the ultimate cheeseburger which costs more than $10. Perhaps it's time to put Jack back in the box.

Wendy's

That smiling red-haired girl has been the logo that has been greeting Wendy's customers for decades. Founder Dave Thomas named the chain after his daughter and it is credited with having the first fast food drive-through windows. The chain thrived and there are locations all over the nation. Those hot and juicy burgers proved popular, but sadly, Wendy's seems to be also succumbing to the lesser quality curse.

On Reddit, a thread calls out the "Slow and painful demise of Wendy's." The creator goes on to detail bacon that isn't crispy, fewer flavors of Coke, and slow service. There is no shortage of responders who agree, pointing out the poor quality of reformed burger patties, the chicken sandwich, and the lettuce. One Redditor puts it down to the death of Thomas. Another thread called Wendy's pathetic, has a Redditor commenting,"Man whats with Wendy's taking a nosedive in quality? Used to be my favorite fast food." Another Redditor felt just as strongly. "Wendy's to me used to be viewed like how I view CFA today vs mid quality sandwiches from other fast food places like Popeyes, McDonald's,etc. Wendy's is horrible now and it's not just the portions, it's very bland." It's sad to see this happening to Dave Thomas' legacy.

Sonic Drive-In

Sonic Drive-In is another chain with a very long history, dating back to 1953. From regional beginnings, the chain went nationwide and coined the slogan, "America's Drive-In" in commercials and other advertising. Drive-ins are a classic part of American casual dining tradition and Sonic has been a part of that. Sadly, this iconic chain, too, has seen a reduction in the quality of its food.

To start with one menu item, Sonic landed on the wrong side on our list of fast food chains that serve the highest and lowest quality fish sandwiches. A Redditor commented on the poor quality of another food item: "The hot dog though? Am I the only person who thinks it's a cheap chicken pork beef whatever dog? If they just increased the price to cover a beef hot dog it would be great." Another Redditor thinks the onion rings are not as good as they once were, stating, "I used to love their onion rings because they are breaded. They changed the ice cream years ago which changed the sweetness/ flavor of the onion rings. They are still okay but not great. They used to dip fresh cut onions in the ice cream mix before breading."

On Trust Pilot, Sonic Drive-In shows a poor rating of 1.6 stars. There are a significant number of reviews complaining about the poor quality of burgers, beverages, and other menu items.

Dairy Queen

No, she is not the spouse of Burger King, but Dairy Queen is a longstanding chain, mainly known for ice cream, but it does have a menu of food items. It has a very long history dating back to its founding in 1940. DQ has long had locations coast to coast, and is a well known name among fast food fans. The chain is know for its dip cones, Dilly bars, and Blizzards, but has the usual burgers, fries, and chicken tenders. How good are they? Well, the quality appears to not be what it once was. There are in fact, 13 things you should think twice about ordering from Dairy Queen. These include food items, Blizzard flavors, and ice cream and other treats.

Trust Pilot shows a not-so-hot rating of 2.0 stars. There are plenty of negative reviews calling out poor quality of a number of menu items. A customer took to Instagram to post a video trying a DQ ice cream treat. They commented in text, "Disappointed is an understatement this is disgusting." In the actual video they had much harsher criticism, using some salty language. This seems surprising but there are customers out there who have seen a decline in food quality at Dairy Queen.

Chipotle

Another Mexican food chain, Chipotle aims to be a bit more elevated than Taco Bell. It is, unfortunately, well known for its food poisoning cases, with the CDC investigating in August 2026 for salmonella. In 2020, the chain consented to pay a fine of $25 million in resolution of food poisoning charges. It is amazing that it is still in business. Not surprisingly, there are plenty of customers complaining about poor quality.

On Reddit, a poster talked about steak of bad quality, saying,"My whole bowl was half gristle and inedible chewy pieces ... gonna cry because i literally paid extra to have steak and i spit out every other bite." Another Redditor responded saying, "it wasn't always like that but lately it's sucked :((." Another unhappy customer took to Facebook to complain and received comments such as, " have eaten there and was not impressed by anything they had to offer. The food was subpar and it needed a good clean." On Threads, yet another diner had issues and stated, "Chipotle's quality has gone down sooo much after the last 10 years. Like my chips are always stale af. And you have to pay for double meat for what used to be one serving back in the day." We also discovered 13 shady things you can't ignore about Chipotle.
