5 Chains With The Highest-Rated Fried Seafood Dishes According To Yelp
Are we in the era of seafood? Maybe. There's certainly no shortage of chain seafood restaurants that serve high-quality food in generous portions. And despite the unique struggles seafood joints face, the chains appear to be thriving at pretty much every price-point, style, and size. There are the obvious fast food spots like Long John Silver's, higher-end regional chains like the Cajun-inspired Pappadeaux, and curveballs like the Midwest staple Culver's. With so much choice in the seafood sector, what should you order when you hit up your local seafood chain?
I can't answer that question completely, but I can help; particularly if you're in the mood for something fried. I've crunched the numbers and read the reviews to work out what Yelp reviewers consider to be the best fried seafood dishes at American restaurant chains. And with fried fish dinners, spicy shrimp, and terrifyingly large seafood platters all getting love, there's almost certainly something here for everyone. Am I going to see a Shrimp Jesus collage in my dreams tonight? Probably. But the shrimp will be perfectly breaded in panko and fried to golden perfection.
Culver's North Atlantic Cod Dinner
Culver's isn't exactly a seafood restaurant. In fact, the Midwest's favorite fast food chain is better known for its cheese curds. That hasn't stopped it from having a recent viral seafood moment, though. The chain's small seafood menu is so zeitgeisty right now that we got one shrimp-loving writer to try every dang maritime item Culver's sells. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Culver's gets a shout out on this list.
Yelp reviewers go mad for the North Atlantic Cod Dinner, with one happy customer speaking for many when they said, "I was extremely surprised by how good the food is here ... Really crispy flaky fish, with some decent crinkle cut fries/roll/coleslaw and tartar sauce." Another reviewer concurred, saying, "So I finally tried the cod last week, and I would strongly recommend it. It was lightly battered, crisp, and the fish itself was beautiful and flaky."
As a Brit, I can confirm that what Culver's serves is 100% legit fish and chips, even if the crinkle cut fries aren't ideal. You can get proper tartar sauce with the meal, though, which makes up for the imperfect potatoes. The cod used in this dinner is also the star ingredient in the chain's fish sandwich, and it's regularly described as being exceptionally high quality in both. If you're craving something other than fish, you can't go wrong with the Butterfly Jumbo Shrimp, which are similarly praised for their crispy panko breading and perfect fry.
Bonefish Grill's Bang Bang Shrimp
Bang Bang Shrimp is one of Bonefish Grill's signature dishes. It's available solo as an appetizer, as the filling for the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos, or as the topping of the Bangin' BFG Burger. The spicy, creamy sauce is what really makes the dish unique and helps explain why it's a guest favorite. On Yelp, customers have good things to say, like this reviewer who wrote, "The food is always delicious, and the Bang Bang Shrimp is a must — crispy, flavorful, and perfectly sauced." Another reviewer commented, "Totally loved the bang bang shrimp and surf and turf was to die for."
One particularly ardent fan of the Montgomery, Alabama Bonefish Grill even penned a parody song for the dish they described as, "Creamy, crunchy, shrimpy goodness every bite." The lyrics start, "Bang Bang, the shrimp take me down." Maybe you can guess the rest?
As a self-described polished casual restaurant, Bonefish Grill is a little higher-end than most of the down and dirty, fast-casual fried seafood spots on this list. (It even offers multi-course wine paired meals!) Despite the polish, its popular dishes beyond the Bang Bang Shrimp mirror favorites from other places. The fish and chips seems to be another hit with Yelp reviewers, while the coconut shrimp appetizer is noted for being huge and tasty.
Captain D's Batter Dipped Fish
From the bougie heights of Bonefish Grill to the friendly simplicity of Captain D's; this is a restaurant with history. The first Captain D's opened in 1969 as Mr. D's Seafood and Hamburgers. The restaurant changed its name a few years later to Captain D's Seafood to emphasize the growing restaurant chain's focus on quality affordable seafood, and the approach must have worked as despite its advanced age the fishy fast food spot was one of the nation's fastest growing seafood chains in 2025.
According to Yelp reviewers, the real draw of Captain D's is its fresh, fried-to-order fish as well as a level of service and attention to detail that's unusual for a fast food spot. As one reviewer who eats at the Fredericksburg, Virginia location said, "The fish is delicious and the people that work there are just wonderful."
One somewhat unusual plus for eating at Captain D's is the customizability and variety of the chain's dishes. If you're lucky enough to have a Captain D's nearby, you'll know the Batter Dipped Fish comes with a choice of two sides, for example, and that the batter dipped fish itself is a core part of several other meals and combos. There's even a Supreme Sampler if you want to try half the menu in one meal.
Long John Silver's Two Piece Fish Meal
With a long history, an unforgettable pirate mascot, and a uniquely punny attitude, Long John Silver's is something of an institution; but how often do you actually think about the fast food seafood chain? Personally, we think the world needs more Long John Silver's, and the generally positive Yelp reviews the fast food chain receives seem to agree. The nostalgia hits hard here, with one Yelp review starting off by saying, "Ahhh Long John Silver's, my childhood!"
Although there's love for most of the menu here, the Two Piece Fish Meal stands out. Once you get over the fact that some old school LJS lovers call its fish fillets "fish planks", it's clear that these are the star of the show when combined with the hush puppies. Another nostalgic Yelper who visited the Gardena, California location was seemingly impressed beyond the power of language when they said, "The batter was so crisp and so hot, the fish planks were flakey ... I can't explain the flavor of this besides SALT but wow it brought me right back." Another customer at the same location kept things short and sweet, saying, "The fish was very good and light and crispy."
Interest in Long John Silver's has risen recently after a slew of TikTok and Instagram food influencers decided it was time to try the widely maligned restaurant. Given that LJS has surprisingly good sustainability practices while also being affordable and good-quality, the chain might be set-up to gain the popularity it has always deserved.
Pappadeaux's Seafood Platter
As you might be able to tell from the name, Pappadeaux takes its inspiration from the New Orleans French Quarter. The chain has locations in just eight lucky states and focuses on great seafood with an upscale vibe that's maybe one step above Bonefish Grill. The menu is extensive and interesting (if a bit pricey), with Cajun specialties that go way beyond a cup of gumbo. There are fresh oysters, gator bites, and a robust selection of salads and veg-heavy sides. There's also an entire fried seafood section on the menu as well as a handful of fried platters, so you'll have plenty of options. The most eagerly reviewed fried seafood dish on Yelp is undoubtedly the Seafood Platter, with its sister dish, the Pappadeaux Platter, following close behind.
The Seafood Platter includes two fried catfish fillets, shrimp, oysters, stuffed shrimp, and stuffed crab. If that doesn't sound like enough, you can upgrade to the Pappadeaux Platter, which adds extra fried shrimp and crawfish (aka crayfish or crawdads, depending on where you're from). One Yelp reviewer at the San Antonio, Texas location said, "Love the crawfish and seafood platter never fails." Another satisfied diner said, "The seafood platter, like all of the other entrees was huge and spilling over with freshly fried fruits of the ocean, fish, shrimp, crab and oysters, a veritable Poseidon's feast." It's unusually poetic for a Yelp review and it's got me convinced the platter that inspired it is the final boss of fried seafood!
