The Fast Food Chain Serving Up High-Quality Fish Sandwiches

Add The Takeout on Google:

When you think of fast food, the first item you probably think of is burgers, not seafood. But there's one chain out there that sells exceptionally good fish sandwiches — and in our opinion, they're worth seeking out. You're going to have to tear your eyes away from the ButterBurgers for a second if you want to try the fried fish sandwich at Culver's.

It's not just any fish, either. Unlike many fast food restaurants which serve Alaskan pollock (which is a great fish for sandwiches), Culver's goes all out and serves big, meaty cod. It's freshly battered and fried then topped with tartar sauce, lettuce, and shredded cheddar all served on a hoagie roll. The cod is flaky, moist, and clean-tasting, and it's also substantial; no factory-formed, square-pattied fish filet here. If you're not in the mood for all that bread, you can skip the bun and order the North Atlantic Cod Dinner instead, which comes with two large pieces of cod (or three if you upgrade), two classic sides, a roll, and a lemon slice for squeezing. This platter will almost make you feel like you're at a fish and chips shop.

Culver's serves an additional type of fish during Lent

What's notable about Culver's fish selection is that during Lent Culver's also offers what it calls Northwoods Walleye. The walleye is Canadian-caught, and like the cod is hand-breaded and fried to order. Unlike cod, however, walleye is a freshwater fish. It has a clean flavor, though it's slightly more distinct than cod (in my opinion). The filets are generously large and you can get it as a sandwich or in a dinner format with two sides.

The walleye is typically available for just a few months, but the North Atlantic cod sandwich (and dinner) are available year-round. In our opinion, both the cod and the walleye are worth a special trip to Culver's as they are some of the highest quality fast food fish sandwiches around. One last personal tip: If you're in the mood for seafood at Culver's, tack on an order of butterfly shrimp while you're at it. (It has no reason being that good.)
