16 Talenti Gelato Flavors, Ranked Worst To Best
I will reluctantly admit I've even been known to say "I want ice cream," only to reach into the freezer for a carton of sherbet as if they're synonymous. I know that sherbet, sorbet, and ice cream are drastically different for clear reasons, but I've always been confused as to what makes gelato and ice cream different.
Before tasting and comparing so many different flavors, I thought it would be important to educate myself on the matter. So, I went digging. I expected the two to have similar ingredients, and I was happy to see I was right. Milk, cream, sugar, and flavoring are all you need to make gelato or ice cream, though ice cream occasionally contains eggs. From what I learned, the two major differences that make a gelato are the amount of air, and the amount of fat.
Gelato typically contains between 5% and 8% fat, while ice cream generally has over 10%. Unlike gelato, ice cream also incorporates more air into the mixture as well. This makes it lighter and fluffier than the denser, slow-churned gelato. After reading up on the basics, I was ready to open 16 pints of Talenti gelato to rank them from worst to best.
16. Raspberry Cheesecake
With a bright swirl of raspberry woven through cheesecake gelato and studded with graham cookie pieces, each bite was like frozen cheesecake. Now is the time to say there wasn't a single flavor I wouldn't eat again, but that doesn't mean they were all worth buying compared to other options. The raspberry cheesecake gelato was a great example of just this.
A good cheesecake is one of the most satisfying desserts you can put in front of me, and with each bite I was reminded of frozen cheesecake. I enjoyed the cakey graham crust, and the raspberry was sweet but also had a bit of tartness, which it needed. There was a definite cream cheese flavor and it was used well, if not a bit too lightly.
While the flavor was spot on, the texture suffered for it. There was a dry, almost crumbly texture that wasn't as satisfying as it should have been. In the end it was too cheesecake-like and not enough like gelato.
15. Vanilla Caramel Swirl
A strong vanilla flavor accompanies ribbons of sweet dulce de leche in every spoonful of this pint. The gelato itself boasts a potent and unmistakable vanilla flavor that was both subtle and enjoyable. Despite the sweet gelato and rich brown caramel, the level of sweetness in the overall product was nearly perfect.
While the flavor was delicious, it also felt very generic. There wasn't anything standout in this pint that made me feel I was treating myself to something premium. There was also an airiness, and general lack of density, that felt as though I was eating any run of the mill ice cream, and not a gelato.
Despite being smooth and appropriately flavored, there was a slight lack of creaminess, only noticeable in such direct competition, that caused it to lag behind. This gelato was delicious, but its run-of-the-mill flavor profile and too-fluffy nature caused it to lag behind in this race.
14. Double Dark Chocolate
One of the denser pints on this list, Talenti's Double Dark Chocolate Gelato really demonstrated the type of texture I expect from a gelato. Combined with an intense flavor, a bite of this gelato makes for a powerful example of how picky I needed to be in order to designate an appropriate place for each flavor in this ranking.
The richness of this gelato had an encompassing quality that melted slowly and coated my mouth in deep cocoa flavor with just enough sweetness to balance the natural bitterness. The pint had a luxurious creaminess, which was hard to enjoy around the hard chips of dark chocolate. They were plentiful and too thick.
Despite being a dark chocolate lover's dream, the ratio of frozen chocolate to gelato made it difficult to enjoy the texture of the gelato itself. It was tasty, but I'd gravitate to some of the better options for chocolate on this list.
13. Coffee Chocolate Chip
Opening with a strong, aromatic, and bitter coffee flavor, this gelato is a perfect representation of genuine roasted coffee flavor. The fudgy flecks of chocolate merge into the ice cream seamlessly to create a bold mocha taste that goes down smoothly. This gelato is to coffee ice cream what a freshly brewed espresso is to a cup of instant coffee.
I generally think of coffee ice cream as the frozen version of Rhode Island's state beverage, coffee milk. Basically, a highly sweet and very creamy dairy treat with a hint of coffee flavor. This gelato, however, leaned beautifully into the nutty and bitter notes of coffee. The chips of chocolate were large enough to be felt, but also small enough to melt at the same rate as the ice cream.
This was a gelato that felt adult and sophisticated, but still somehow left me wanting for something more. It felt less dense than others, and while the flavor was potent, the texture was just a touch more icy than some of the others.
12. Mediterranean Mint
I've always been a fan of mint chip ice cream, but I was always one to pick almost any other flavor before it. Even when I do have a scoop, I prefer a more subtle and less pungent minty taste. This Mediterranean mint gelato is perfect for you if you're the same.
The mint flavor was mild to the point of being an almost background note. That may sound like a downside, but in reality it made it more special. This was one of the creamiest pints of gelato I tried. The moment it hit my tongue it was like a cool sip of rich cream upon which the essence of mint swam.
While the level of mint was tantalizing and light, the texture of the gelato was fluffy and very airy. It was certainly not denser than any ice cream I've had, and I'd even say it was less so than many. This pint is definitely worth getting if you love mint and want to see it done with finesse.
11. Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch
With a full-bodied chocolate flavor, delicate touch of hazelnut, and hidden gems of crunch, this flavor of gelato had so many things going for it. Despite having never had it before, there was something familiar about the taste. As I ate I realized it reminded me of Hershey's chocolate syrup.
The gelato had a strong chocolate flavor, and carried a touch of sharpness in its aftertaste. It took a few bites to realize the rising sugar level was the result of a chocolate fudge sauce ribboned throughout. While enjoyable, the level of sweetness almost covered up the nutty hazelnut flavor behind the sugary chocolate, though not enough to make it disappear completely.
The real star for me was the little pieces of crunchy chocolate cookie that cracked delightfully each time I came across one. These bitty treats were so crisp and crunchy that I was basically digging for them as I ate.
10. Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip
This black raspberry gelato was one of the denser flavors of Talenti that I sampled for this ranking. It had a weight and resistance to it that fought the spoon and implied, just from scooping, how rich it was going to be. I was also happy to see a return of the small flecks of chocolate chip that I saw in the coffee gelato.
The gelato itself had a smooth and creamy texture, with the tiny bits of chocolate melting into the silky ice cream and adding to the flavor seamlessly. Delicious as it was, I couldn't help but notice that the chocolate quickly became an overwhelming flavor. While the first moments of each spoonful were black raspberry, they quickly left the fruit flavor behind.
Texturally this was a great gelato. The flavor was good, but had a lack of balance between the fruit and chocolate. This pint is easy to enjoy, but it ended up more chocolate than black raspberry.
9. Cookies And Cream Layers
This was my first experience trying Talenti's Gelato Layers, which combine layers of gelato, toppings, and sauces to make a parfait-like frozen dessert. If I'm being honest, I didn't expect to be impressed. The idea of paying for a pint of gelato that is half cookies seemed strange.
Then I tried it. Not only was the cookies and cream gelato creamy, if not a bit too fluffy, but the combined layers of chocolaty cookie pieces, buttery dulce de leche, and gelato came together and created a self-indulgent experience. Even scooping, which I assumed would be impossible, turned out to be easier than expected.
There were moments I felt like I was missing out on the amount of gelato, but it was hard to argue with the flavor. While I would definitely eat this again, I don't know that I'd actively pick it when in the mood for gelato specifically.
8. Belgian Chocolate
When it came to pure chocolate flavor, no other option even came close to this one. I'd even say that if we were to compare all the chocolate flavors from Talenti only by the quality and depth of the cocoa, I think this would win every time. It's hard to explain in words how perfectly balanced this pint was.
Incredibly dense, each bite was somehow filled with more chocolate than it was gelato. The sweetness levels seemed a bit high at first, but as I ate I noticed just how rich the bitter chocolate was. There was an almost dry quality to the chocolate that ended up balancing well against the sweetness.
Each mouthful of this gelato inspired me to question whether this was the pinnacle of cocoa. Was there any way imaginable for something to taste more like chocolate? I was beginning to doubt it. This smooth gelato and complex, but simple, flavor are perfect for anyone looking to satisfy their chocolate craving.
7. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
While I love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter, I am often one to avoid them when the two are frozen together. In so many frozen treats, the peanut butter ends up being a hard swirl or lightly used side note. In this container, however, the balance was perfect.
After multiple tastings, it was hard to deny that this was the densest and most full-bodied of the Talenti flavors. Unlike some others that seemed fluffed up with too much air, there was a real weight to this ice cream that matched well with the intense flavors. Not only was the chocolate smooth and creamy, with a lighter note than the previous gelato, but the swirls of peanut butter were subtle in texture but powerful in taste.
From my first bite I was wrapped in sweet and nutty flavors. The small peanut butter cups added a nice texture without being too hard. This pint is a must-have for those who love this flavor combination.
6. Madagascan Vanilla Bean
Vanilla is always stuck in the box of being a boring flavor. However, gelato like this is a strong reminder of just how bold and pleasing the naturally demure flavor can be. Despite its subtlety, this pint of Madagascar vanilla had a way of stealing the show from many of the bolder options.
Upon first looks, I was reminded of a classic French vanilla ice cream. The tiny specks of vanilla seeds and bright white color gave that impression. The taste, however, was so much simpler and more encompassing. The moment it began to melt on my tongue it spread a wonderfully creamy flavor of floral vanilla and dairy notes throughout my mouth.
I was sure that I'd found the best vanilla when tasting and ranking the Bettergoods brand ice creams, but this gelato may have changed my mind. Though mellow, the actual flavor was bright and fulfilling. This was a perfect reminder of why vanilla is consistently among the country's top flavors.
5. Southern Butter Pecan
The flavor on this gelato was so much more complex and wonderful than what I was expecting. The depth and richness of the buttery gelato, the plentiful inclusion of nutty pecans, and the sweet ribbons of caramel were a delight. I went in for a scoop expecting one thing, and was blown away by another.
Unlike the straightforward notes I expected to find, Talenti's gelato had a more butterscotch-like flavor and creamy tang that reminded me of cheesecake. The sweet, but also savory, dulce de leche swirl matched the gelato perfectly and resonated and enhanced the pecan flavor. There was an irrefutable elegance to the flavors I won't forget.
Was this the best butter pecan flavor I've ever had? Yes. Do I want to be eating more of it right now? Again, yes. While there was a touch of saccharine sweetness that went too far, this pint of gelato was one I'll definitely pick up again.
4. Caramel Cookie Crunch
Among all the gelato I tasted from Talenti, this was the most dense and creamy. While the vanilla flavor wasn't as enveloping as the Madagascan version, it had a texture that was perfect for the application. This pint reminded me of an ice cream cake in the most appreciable way.
This pint, once again, features Talenti's signature dulce de leche, and successfully balances the sweetness of that caramel with an appropriately sweetened ice cream. That combination, combined with crunchy cookie pieces studded throughout the jar, created a harmonious blend of flavor and texture that was hard to find fault with.
I've come to realize one of the most impressive qualities of Talenti is the company's ability to not overdo the sugar levels. Look no further for a commendable example of that feat. While simple in its execution, this gelato is a crowd-pleaser for sure.
3. Italian Tiramisu Layers
Tiramisu is one of the most iconic Italian desserts in my opinion. Layers of sweet and fluffy mascarpone cream and coffee-soaked ladyfinger cookies form an almost heavenly dessert experience. This small container brings that quintessential dish to a completely new place.
Layering a tangy and sweet mascarpone gelato with cake-like cookie pieces and cold brew coffee sorbetto flawlessly recreates the flavors you expect from a slice of tiramisu. I was particularly pleased with the mascarpone gelato, which reminded me of cheesecake, but with a milkier and less bold flavor.
A layer of chocolate fudge added both depth and complexity, while helping to merge the flavors of this classic in a new way. Once again I found myself wondering why I'd buy a pint of gelato that is only have-filled with frozen dairy, but each bite reminded me that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.
2. Pacific Coast Pistachio
I'm a sucker for pistachio ice cream. I fought hard with myself placing this flavor so high, since I wanted to be sure I wasn't just putting a favorite at the top. However, no matter how I graded the variety of gelatos before me, this one was definitely special.
Having long loved pistachio, I often find many treats pumping up the flavor of pistachio with almond extracts. While I also love almond, nothing is more disappointing than tasting almond instead of pistachio when biting into a spoonful of ice cream or gelato. However, every bite of this pint glowed with genuine pistachio flavor and plentiful bits of the soft, but still crunchy, nuts.
The rich cream, perfect level of sugar, and full-bodied flavor really made this gelato stand out against every other pistachio dessert I've ever had. Even with my personal bias, this was done so well that I'd have ranked it highly even if I wasn't a fan. I have a feeling every pistachio dessert I have in the future will be competing with this gelato.
1. Sea Salt Caramel
While I enjoy caramel, I tend to think of it as cloying. Despite the richer notes that develop when sugar becomes caramel, in most cases it needs to be used sparingly lest my teeth begin to ache. Even salted caramels tend to be too sugary before being balanced with salt.
This pint of caramel gelato shook the foundation of my beliefs about caramel. Not only was the base flavor perfectly balanced between bitter, sweet, and salty, but there was a deep savory note that raised the bar for every caramel I'll have in the future. No matter how many bites I took, I remained stunned by the intricacy of the flavor.
Usually avoiding hard chocolates mixed into my ice cream, or gelato, the soft caramel-filled truffles melted perfectly when bitten, and provided a chewy filling that melted into each bite. Caramel isn't my favorite, but this was truly a special blend of flavor that deserves to have made it to the top.
Methodology
In ranking such a variety of flavors, especially of desserts, I do my best to remain as neutral as possible. For this ranking I chose to break things down into two separate phases. The first was a general tasting and review, and the second was a more concerted effort to judge them without bias. The latter was the more difficult.
In researching gelato, I learned that the qualities I looked for should be density, creaminess, intensity of flavor, and texture as it melts. I chose to add another category, enjoyment, only to use as a tiebreaker when needed. Having already tasted and taken notes on the pints, I knew that ratings would be tight with the standard quality the brand had shown me.
I went through a second round of tasting, awarding up to 10 points to each gelato based on the above categories. After giving each a score based on how well it fulfilled the expected conditions, points for the first five categories were added up, and the gelatos were ranked accordingly. In the few examples where scores were the same, points from the sixth category of enjoyment were added to break the tie.
