Beloved 55-Year-Old Restaurant Chain Closes Every Last Location (For Good)

It seems restaurants can't catch a break these days as another beloved chain has called it quits. O'Charley's Restaurant and Bar has decided to close all of its locations across the country, ending a 55-year run. The Nashville-based chain certainly wasn't one of the oldest restaurants on earth, but after opening its first location in 1971 it delighted patrons with its charming Southern hospitality for decades. Now, it is sadly just a memory.

Folks unfamiliar with the chain might assume it was an Irish pub from the name, but O'Charley's was known for its comforting atmosphere and classic American cuisine. Long-time customers and former employees alike are mourning the abrupt closure as they reminisce about great times and good eats at the chain.

O'Charley's was operating 52 stores nationwide when it suddenly threw in the towel. Employees who are now currently out of work and patrons who adored the restaurant are still in disbelief at its closure, but given the company's struggles in the past, the swift closures aren't entirely unexpected.

Charles Watkins was the original owner of O'Charley's, and he ran the business for 13 years before selling it to David Watchel. The new owner expanded the restaurant's footprint over the next decade, successfully growing it into a 45-location chain with stores primarily east of the Mississippi River. It continued to flourish, eventually establishing over 100 restaurants in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States, but financial struggles eventually halted this expansion and store closures soon followed.

Sales reportedly plummeted by 34% from 2017 to 2022 as fewer people were going out to eat, and the company was forced to close 51 locations in 2023. There was still optimism about the future of the business' remaining stores at the time, and new partnerships with NASCAR and Coca-Cola fueled some of that confidence.

Unfortunately, it didn't pay off. In 2026, the chain continued to see a decline in customer traffic and store sales fell in kind. With the hasty closure of its remaining 52 locations, O'Charley's joins the popular BBQ chain that suddenly closed (Smokey Bones) and the controversial Las Vegas attraction Heart Attack Grill, which both called it quits in 2026.
