Oreo's Sister Cookie Didn't Survive The '80s, But We Want It Back

Oreos have been firmly established as one of Nabisco's flagship products for over a century, and it's safe to say the classic black-and-white treats will be sticking around for many years to come. However, not all similar sandwich cookies from the company behind Oreo have fared so well. Case in point: Giggles. Just a few decades ago, these charming Nabisco cookies were a snack aisle staple across the United States, but these days, they're a once-popular '80s snack most people forgot about.

Giggles sandwich cookies, which were filled with two different flavors of cream, debuted in the mid-1980s and quickly became a coveted snacktime treat for kids and kids-at-heart. Unfortunately, Giggles' sweet success would stay in the '80s — by 1990, Nabisco had largely phased them out. The exact reasons that Giggles were discontinued are unclear, but it could have had to do with slumping sales in an ever-evolving snack market.

Many fans would very much like to enjoy Giggles again. In a Reddit thread on the r/nostalgia subreddit, one user promised, "I will do everything in my power to get these back in production if I happen to stumble into being a multimillionaire one day."

Much like "milk's favorite cookie," Giggles featured a cream filling sandwiched between two wafer cookies, but a few key differences set them apart. They sported cut-out faces with grins that were either adorable or creepy, depending on your perspective, and perhaps most importantly, they contained a dual-flavored filling. This was quite an innovation at the time (Nabisco wouldn't release Double Delight Oreos, filled with two distinctly flavored creams, until over a decade later). Giggles came in three varieties: classic chocolate cookies with fudge and vanilla cream, vanilla cookies with the same filling, and chocolate cookies with peanut butter and fudge cream.

In a Reddit thread discussing the nostalgic snacks, users gushed over the balanced texture and chocolatey flavor of Giggles cookies. One person raved, "Oh these were absolutely HEAVENLY." On the other hand, many children (and adults) found the grinning faces mildly terrifying. A number of Reddit users noted that the cookies were unsettling, and one person put it bluntly, writing, "I think they stole my soul."
