The Hands-Down Best Campbell's Chunky Frozen Bowl Flavor We Tried

Add The Takeout on Google:

Campbell's came out with a line of Chunky Frozen Bowls earlier this year, and there's eight of them retailing at $5.49 each. They come in a host of flavors, from Meat Lover's Lasagna to Country Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes. We ranked all eight Campbell's Chunky Frozen Bowls, and while some were disappointing because they lacked key elements like enough sauce, one mashup of two classic dishes ended up being our favorite — the Philly Cheesesteak Mac and Cheese bowl.

This bowl starts with a base of elbow macaroni mixed with seasoned beef, green bell peppers, and onions, all in a cheese sauce. We particularly enjoyed the generous amount of green peppers and onions included, but what really made it satisfying was the cheese sauce, which is made with mozzarella rather than provolone, Cheez Wiz, or American (as would normally go on a cheesesteak order). Our writer said that the mozzarella results in "an especially creamy sauce which serves as the perfect base for a well-balanced bowl that embraces the best of the cheesesteak." The runner-up bowl was another beefy one: We liked the Beefy Pasta with Stroganoff Sauce particularly for its mushrooms.

The Campbell's Chunky Philly Cheesesteak Mac and Cheese Bowl isn't perfect

Diet-conscious folks might want to note a few things before digging in. First of all, this bowl clocks in at 490 calories (for reference, a double cheeseburger from McDonald's has 440). There's also 11 grams of saturated fat (55% of the daily recommended intake) and a whopping 1,220 milligrams of sodium (53% of the daily recommended intake). This isn't exactly ideal if you're avoiding salt or fat, but if you don't mind that, there are 23 grams of protein as well. Most of these Chunky bowls are packing over 1,100 milligrams in sodium, so it can't entirely be avoided if you reach for one.

That being said, Campbell's Chunky Philly Cheesesteak Mac and Cheese Bowl is the one we'd reach for based off taste alone thanks to the generous amount of vegetables, tender beef, and silky cheese sauce. (We're willing to overlook the fact that bell peppers aren't typically part of an authentic cheesesteak.) You can't beat the convenience of a frozen microwave meal, and as a bonus this offering from Campbell's doesn't come packaged in a can for once.
