Trader Joe's Discontinued This Popular Dupe, And Fans Are Losing It: 'I Just Fell To My Knees'

Unfortunately, we're the bearers of bad news today. If you're a fan of Trader Joe's dips (which we've ranked 19 of before), there's a popular TJ's dupe that's being discontinued. You'll be double disappointed if you're vegan because it's the plant-based Almond Chipotle Dip, which is a knockoff of the very popular Bitchin' Sauce. The Almond Chipotle Dip has disappeared from Trader Joe's website as well as from store shelves, and that almost always means it's no more — at least for the time being.

In a Reddit thread, Trader Joe's customers are lamenting. "I just fell to my knees," wrote one Redditor. Another said, "This one hurts. It's such a good dip." Other customers mentioned they'd just recently been looking for it before learning this unfortunate information. Some people were upset because they had been using it for things like drizzling over vegetarian chili, dipping fries into, and using it for breakfast sandwiches. Some Redditors who claimed to be Trader Joe's employees confirmed that the dip is indeed gone. If you do happen to stumble upon some, it's likely the last you'll see from this batch. As the employee said, "I work for TJ's and I order the dips for my store. This product is officially discontinued as of this month."

Trader Joe's Almond Chipotle Dip was an accurate dupe

During the taste test ranking we mentioned, our writer noted that Trader Joe's Almond Chipotle Dip was enjoyable. While it landed in 12th place, that's not because it wasn't delicious; that's more a function of the fact many of the Trader Joe's dips we tried were great. Our taste tester said, "Trader Joe's has a well-earned reputation for riffing on popular products — often, they manage to match or even surpass the original (Scandinavian Swimmers, anyone?). In this case, their Almond Chipotle Dip comes close. The flavor profile is nearly identical: nutty from the almonds, smoky from the chipotle, and tangy enough to keep you dipping for more."

We did find the dip was slightly watery and had less kick than the original, but it was still good, which makes this discontinuation understandably disappointing. To add insult to injury, it was cheaper than the brand-name version. That being said, at least we know that Bitchin' Sauce is widely available at other stores — I see it at Costco frequently, though in bulk containers. While this news is likely to make some people grouchy, Trader Joe's does have a habit of bringing back discontinued items. Unfortunately for now, you're going to have to shell out for the real deal until this dupe returns.
