5 Restaurant Chains That Are Surprisingly Still Family-Run In 2026

In a time where every fast food chain seems to be either a huge corporate entity or is at least owned by one, it's encouraging to know there are still popular restaurant chains that keep it all in the family. The restaurants featured here are all owned and operated by the same families that founded them, and this isn't exactly a common story. Keeping these large-scale operations family-owned probably makes for some pretty stressful dynamics (along with some interesting family holidays).

There's no doubt you're familiar with all of these chains because they each have contributed to American pop food culture as we know it. The majority of them, of course, involve burgers — after all, it's the quintessential fast food product. But there are a few here that serve other kinds of food yet still carry a lot of weight, whether that's from memories at the shopping mall, late night runs through the drive-thru, or just because they're crowd favorites.

In-N-Out Burger has been in the family for over 75 years

If there's any fast food chain that singularly represents the West Coast, it would have to be In-N-Out. Founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park, California, In-N-Out is known for its summery burgers with brightly colored lettuce and fresh tomatoes as well as its long lines at the drive-thru. Everyone now knows to order its classic burgers Animal Style from its not-so-secret menu; a version of the burger which was added to the menu way back in 1961.

Currently, In-N-Out is run by Harry and Esther's granddaughter, Lynsi Snyder. When Lynsi first started to work at In-N-Out, she applied and stood in line just like anyone else to land the job. But her family left her with quite a legacy in 2017, when on her 35th birthday Lynsi received the final part of her inheritance, which made her a multi-billionaire. In-N-Out Burger remains as popular as ever, with over 400 locations now reaching as far east as Tennessee. The chain celebrated its 75th anniversary of operations in 2023.

White Castle is fast food family royalty

Americans owe a lot to White Castle, which has the distinction of being the very first fast food restaurant ever. It was founded in 1921 by Billy Ingram, who sold his signature diminutive sliders for only a nickel each. In 1957, Ingram was dubbed "The Grandaddy of the Hamburger" by Fast Food Magazine, cementing his place as the creator of the fast food industry before he passed away in 1966.

The steam-grilled, square burgers are still the chain's mainstay which the Ingram family continues to sell under its own leadership. Lisa Ingram currently serves as White Castle's CEO and is a member of the fourth generation of the family to run the business. She's credited as helming menu expansions during her tenure and is also the first woman to hold the position. Other family members who work for White Castle include the third-generation John Kelley, who serves as a vice president, and the fourth-generation Jamie Richardson, White Castle's chief marketing officer.

Panda Express is a California-based family powerhouse

If you think of the classic shopping mall food court experience, you might picture the glass display of heat lamps and food at a Panda Express stall. The first iteration of Panda Express was founded in 1973 in Pasadena, California under the name Panda Inn by Andrew Cherng and his father (and chef) Ming-Tsai Cherng. The full-service Panda Inn still exists today, where it serves a mix of Sichuan and Mandarin flavors.

10 years later, in 1983, Andrew and his wife Peggy Cherng opened a smaller, more streamlined version called Panda Express (yes, in a nearby mall). The two met in college at Baker University in Kansas as international students; Andrew studied mathematics while Peggy received degrees in engineering and computer science. Panda Express' claim-to-fame, its extraordinarily popular orange chicken (which features dark meat), was invented by one of the Panda Express chefs, Andy Kao, in 1987. The Cherng's still operate as cofounders, co-chairs, and co-CEOs of Panda Express; and one of their children, Andrea Cherng, is the current chief brand officer.

The Cathy family still runs Chick-fil-A

Bone-in chicken franchises are often popular, but Chick-fil-A ditches it entirely in favor of boneless sandwiches, tenders, and nuggets. Apparently it's a recipe for resounding success, as the Truett Cathy-founded business is more than thriving all these years after getting its start in 1967. Truett Cathy's son, Dan Cathy, led as Chick-fil-A's CEO from 2013 until 2021 when his son, Andrew Cathy, took over. Truett Cathy's other son, Bubba Cathy, has also had multiple roles at Chick-fil-A and currently sits as the executive vice president. As for Truett Cathy's daughter, Trudy Cathy White, she's a published author who serves as a Chick-fil-A brand ambassador.

The Cathy family's religious beliefs are what keep Chick-fil-A stores closed on Sundays despite the estimation that being closed one day a week costs the company $1 billion in annual sales. Those same beliefs have also been controversial for the chain, as the Cathy family's opposition to same-sex marriage has been a subject of criticism for years.

Five Guys was in fact started by five family members

Five Guys is known for its burgers and massive portions of fries, and was indeed founded by five people. That would be Jerry and Janie Murrell along with three of their sons (all of whom are still involved in aspects of the business today). They opened the first store in 1986 and two additional brothers joined the crew in the '90s as the restaurant grew out to more locations. Fast forward to today, and Five Guys now has around 2,000 locations across the globe — not bad for a family-run burger business.

These days, the seven family member team doesn't need to run the day-to-day operations as much (aka no need to flip burgers and mop floors), though Jerry Murrell did shell out $1.5 million to employees after an extraordinarily stressful BOGO promotion. The family meets with the executive team weekly to discuss the top-down view of the company. Five Guys is currently based out of Alexandria, Virginia, near where the company was founded.
