Forget The Cakes And Pies: This Is The Best Thing At Publix's Bakery
For those of you lucky enough to live near a Publix, you already know its famed "Pub Subs" (or sub sandwiches) are a cult favorite. But don't forget that, as a grocery chain, the store not only features a deli but a bakery too. That's why we had a taste tester conduct a ranking of 12 items from Publix's bakery, and while not everything was their cup of tea (some items were terribly dry), there was one item that stood out above the rest, and surprisingly, it wasn't even a pastry. It turns out the challah bread at Publix is the best thing the bakery produces, and the others are not even close.
Our writer said, "I'm going to tell you my personal favorite way to eat a Publix challah, and I'm urging you to try it. [...] Before you go anywhere, take the red twisty tie off, pull out a fresh slice right from the middle of the loaf, and devour it right there in the parking lot. If you are ever lucky enough to be in a Publix bakery when the challahs come out of the oven, get a warm one, and that car slice will change your life."
Ways to enjoy Publix challah
If it sounds like we're enthusiastic about Publix' challah, that's because we are. Challah is a fluffy, spongy Jewish egg bread with a touch of sweetness and many uses (though it's awfully difficult to stop eating on its own). We find it's particularly delicious when topped with eggs for breakfast or as a basic sandwich bread.
But some of the more unique uses to enjoy it include an easy French toast casserole and a more savory application: Thanksgiving stuffing. (Here's how to dry the bread out for stuffing, by the way.) Users on Reddit have other creative uses for challah; in one thread asking for suggestions, a commenter said, "Recently I've been vibing with a challah PeanutButter & Jelly pan-fried like you would a grilled cheese. [sic]" Others mention things like eating the bread with various dips, too.
Next time you're at Publix, and you can smell the distinct scent of yeast baking in the oven, we highly recommend you run over to the bakery and get a warm loaf of challah. We're confident you'll find plenty of uses for it, if it even makes it home past the parking lot, that is.
