The Creamy Hostess Dupe We Found At Dollar Tree Punches Above Its $1.25 Price Tag

Dollar Tree is a gold mine when it comes to sweets, and the best part is, you can find dupes of some of your favorite items there at a fraction of the cost. We recently dove into its desserts and found six Dollar Tree treats that are worth your money. One of them is a copycat of a Hostess classic, and not only are these cake rolls cheap, but they also hit the spot. These would be Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Flavored Swiss Rolls, which are similar to Hostess' Ho Hos.

These chocolate cake rolls with the cream filling cost us $1.25, and our tester said, "They are soft, sweet, and satisfying." We did notice a bit of greasiness to them, but that's par for the course when it comes to processed snack cakes (I find the same happens with Little Debbie Swiss Rolls). We also took price into account when we tried them; our tester kept in mind that these wouldn't necessarily be exactly the same quality as a name-brand snack cake, but for the money, we found them to be a great deal and delicious at the same time.

The once-popular Hostess version of Swiss rolls, Ho Hos, was a rolled chocolate cake filled with a cream filling. Note the usage of the past tense here: Though Hostess has never clearly said anything about it, Ho Hos appear to have been discontinued, possibly sometime in 2025. The product no longer exists on Hostess' website, and searches for the product seem to come up with nothing now. A Reddit post also corroborates their demise, with a user writing, "I just asked them [Hostess] too today and they responded to me saying they were discontinued." One detail is that Hostess filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and has had a bit of a dramatic time staying afloat through now.

So even if you wanted the name-brand rolled snack cake from Hostess, you can't score them anyway. Mrs. Freshley's, the brand that makes the Dollar Tree version, is actually owned by the same company that owns other snack cake brands like Tastykake, along with store bread brands like Butternut and Wonder, which explains their ability to make a good store-bought Swiss roll. It's one we recommend you pick up at Dollar Tree if you're in the mood, along with many more dupes that are worth mentioning.
