Not Burger King, Not Wendy's: The Fast Food Chain With The Hands-Down Worst Fries

French fries are a burger's best friend, and if they're good enough they can almost steal the spotlight entirely. We recently put our palates to the test and ranked french fries from 10 fast food chains. We found that some of them are golden and delicious (the best fast food french fries ended up being from a ubiquitous drive-thru), while others left us with the aftertaste of mealy disappointment. Unfortunately, as with any ranking, there was a clear loser; and this time it was a relatively lesser-known burger chain.

The fries from Mooyah ended up dead last on our list. When we tried them, they looked just right. They had an appealing, standard fry color and they were thankfully crisp. But the Mooyah fries included an extra element that threw them off balance. Our taste tester wrote, "There is nothing I dislike more than seasoned fries that come with a weird batter-like coating. It's almost like re-frying an already fried french fry and for me it's an immediate deal-breaker. All you taste is the greasy heavy shell and everything else gets lost in translation." In this case, simpler would have certainly been better, though we will concede that a lot of people enjoy battered fries, like the ones at Checkers and Rally's.

If you haven't heard of Mooyah, that's probably because it has under 100 locations in only 20 states. It specializes in a mix of classic and creative burgers; its signature Mooyah cheeseburger comes with a patty on a potato roll that features American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Mooyah sauce. There are also over-the-top sandwiches like the Hamburdog, which is a burger topped with an entire hot dog, cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, onion strings, and ketchup. The restaurant offers regular fries, sweet potato fries, and freshly made chips as the sides.

Because it's not a huge chain, there's not a lot of online chatter regarding its fries, but in one Reddit thread (from 10 years ago) a commenter said, "I like their burgers better than Five Guys. Don't really care for their fries, though." Another person mentioned the fries were pretty salty. So it sounds like Mooyah's burgers themselves are a solid choice, but you should probably just avoid the regular fries, doubly so if you're not a fan of oily, battered ones. Our hearts will forever be loyal to the perfect specimens beneath the Golden Arches.
