13 Campbell's Soup Flavors Ranked Worst To Best

Add The Takeout on Google:

Though I personally love making homemade soup, I'm also acutely aware of its challenges. Homemade soup can turn out bland if you don't have the right ingredients or add enough salt, and for some, the process may prove more frustrating than it's worth. Thankfully, Campbell's has been making it easy to enjoy all the deliciousness soup has to offer for generations, and the brand is still pumping out a wide range of flavorful options.

Nevertheless, with so many varieties on the shelf, it can be hard to know which Campbell's soup varieties are truly worth bringing home. Don't worry, though — I've already loaded up my cart with all the most popular Campbell's soup offerings, so you don't have to. In the upcoming post, I'm exploring everything from taste and texture to nutritional stats, all in an effort to get you the details you need concerning which Campbell's soup products deserve a spot on your grocery list.

Sound like a plan? If so, stay tuned. I'm ranking 13 Campbell's soup varieties from worst to best, coming up next.

13. Campbell's Chunky Chicken Broccoli Cheese With Potato Soup

I couldn't wait to try Campbell's Chunky Chicken Broccoli Cheese With Potato Soup. I love anything broccoli and cheddar, so I thought this Campbell's variety would top my list for warm, comforting flavor. It contains a lot of fat and calories — 430 calories, 26 grams of fat, and 14 grams of protein per can, to be exact — but that's how you know it's good, right? There's also 1,940 milligrams of sodium (equal to a shocking 84% of your daily value), making it one of the saltiest Campbell's soup offerings on the list.

Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken Broccoli Cheese Soup has a very thick base, most of which came curdled; the curdling was so bad, in fact, that I had to check the expiration date. The soup didn't smell like broccoli, which makes sense, given that there was virtually none in there. The soup looked and smelled like chicken without hardly any broccoli pieces or flavor to enjoy.

Considering all the fat, calories, and sodium in Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken Broccoli Cheese With Potato Soup, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Broccoli lovers would be much better off roasting the vegetable to make a much more delicious version of cheesy chicken broccoli soup on their own at home than purchasing this Campbell's variety.

12. Campbell's Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder Soup

I adore corn chowder, especially when it's doused with the melty goodness of sharp cheddar, so naturally, I was excited to try Campbell's Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder Soup. Like the previous variety, this Campbell's option is a bit richer in terms of fat and calories — expect 390 calories, 18 grams of fat, 1,850 milligrams of sodium (80% of your recommended daily value), and 14 grams of protein per can.

Campbell's Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder Soup is a great example of how the brand tends to leave out the very ingredient most people look forward to most. Rather than offering hungry fans generous amounts of corn, Campbell's whips up a soup consisting primarily of cream and carrots, with hardly any corn pieces in sight. Unfortunately, its flavor reflects its look — like the aforementioned broccoli soup, Campbell's corn chowder tasted more like creamed chicken than anything.

Aside from the obvious lack of key ingredients, I'll also note that Campbell's corn chowder soup is unappetizingly smooth — due to the lack of corn, Campbell's chowder translates basically as a thick, pasty, white sauce. All in all, despite being one of the varieties I looked forward to most, Campbell's Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder Soup was, sadly, a major letdown.

11. Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken and Sausage Gumbo

Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken and Sausage Gumbo certainly looks promising, but, ironically, isn't flavorful at all. This Louisiana-style soup contains 290 calories per can, along with 7 grams of fat, 1,720 milligrams of sodium (75% of your recommended daily value), and 14 grams of protein.

I'll admit I've never had gumbo before, but I'd bet money it tastes nothing like Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. The consistency was very watery, as was its taste — it contains unique veggies like okra and bell peppers, along with what seemed like a ridiculous amount of rice. Though there's supposed to be chicken and andouille sausage in the mix, I counted only 2 ½ pieces of sausage rounds and 2 chunks of chicken, which is hardly enough to constitute a good, hearty soup. Regarding spice, I consider Campbell's gumbo to be of medium heat — kids might not like it, but it should be tolerable for most adults. Overall, I found Campbell's Chunky Soup Chicken and Sausage Gumbo disappointing; its obvious lack of flavor makes it one of the least appealing of the bunch.

10. Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup

There's nothing like a good bowl of chili mac to satisfy cravings for rich, beefy, umami flavors, which is why I truly expected Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup to land among my top picks. Nutritionally, Campbell's chili mac contains 440 calories, 15 grams of fat, 1,720 milligrams of sodium (75% of your daily recommended value), and 21 grams of protein per can.

Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup features jumbo elbow macaroni noodles, ground meat, and diced tomatoes all enveloped in a thick, rich, glossy tomato sauce. Judging by looks alone, Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup seemed like it was going to be a winner, but unfortunately, that simply wasn't the case. After leaning in for a smell, my dreams of savory goodness were quickly dashed to the ground as the scent of cheap chili dog sauce wafted back at me. I gave it a quick slurp and was instantly vexed — Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup tasted exactly how it smelled.

Campbell's Chunky Chili Mac Soup tastes like cheap canned chili mixed with noodles, turning what could have been a delicious meal into a total waste of money. I suppose you could try doctoring it up with brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and salt, but by then, I think you will have probably put in more effort than it's actually even worth.

9. Campbell's Chunky Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables Soup

Campbell's Chunky Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables Soup was yet another letdown, mainly because of its lack of meat. According to the description on the can, this Campbell's Chunky Soup offering comes with sirloin burger rounds and several hearty vegetables, including peas, carrots, green beans, and potatoes. It sports 300 calories, 9 grams of fat, 1,720 milligrams of sodium (about 75% of your daily recommended value), and 15 grams of protein per can.

Campbell's Chunky Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables Soup is made up primarily of veggies, with the sirloin rounds acting as more of an accent than the main event. Despite containing 75% of my daily value in salt, I had to resist adding more seasoning, which I'm finding to be a theme with many of the Campbell's Chunky Soup varieties.

Campbell's Chunky Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables Soup features burger rounds that are large and thick, around the size of a silver dollar, and though their texture is tender and inoffensive, there were only 6 to 7 rounds in the whole can. All in all, Campbell's Chunky Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables Soup, though decent, still isn't the best Campbell's has to offer, if you ask me.

8. Campbell's Chunky Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup

I grew up eating Campbell's Chunky Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup multiple times a week, and though I found it delicious in my youth, it hit different this time around. Campbell's Chunky Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup contains 230 calories, 4 grams of fat, 1,900 milligrams of sodium (83% of your daily recommended value), and 13 grams of protein per can. It contains lots of hearty veggies, including potatoes, carrots, and peas, alongside beef chunks to yield what should have been lots of savory, bold, beefy flavor.

Campbell's Chunky Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup has a nice smooth velvety gravy-like soup base, but it misses the mark in terms of complexity of flavor. Oddly, this soup came across as bitter; it had all the right veggies to make it a comforting bite, but because of its sharp, pungent taste, I had trouble really getting into it. Still, when you aren't able to make a pot roast but are still craving its comforting savor, I suppose this might suffice as a quick canned option.

By the way, the beef bites in Campbell's Chunky Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup were (unsurprisingly) sparse — I'd say there were 5 to 6 decent-sized pieces in each can. Hey, at least the texture was good — none of the pieces were tough, and they practically melted in my mouth.

7. Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle Soup

Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle Soup isn't bad, but it also isn't as good as I remember. This classic Campbell's soup variety has your typical chicken noodle ingredients — chicken, celery, carrots, and egg noodles. Nutritionally speaking, expect 260 calories, 7 grams of fat, 1,690 milligrams of sodium (73% of your daily recommended value), and 19 grams of protein per can.

One thing I appreciate about Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle Soup is that it seems to contain slightly more meat than other varieties. There was also plenty of celery, carrots, and noodles, making this soup a very robust option compared to a few of the others. Even so, Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle Soup is nowhere near a replacement for the real thing; the flavor is pretty weak, and the broth is too bland to ever hold a candle to a slow-simmered pot of chicken noodle cooked from scratch.

So, though not a terrible pick, I still don't consider Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle Soup worth the buy — I'd much rather indulge in some of the upcoming, higher-ranking Campbell's soup offerings or another high-quality chicken noodle soup brand than this one.

6. Campbell's Chunky Minestrone Soup With Italian Sausage

Campbell's Chunky Minestrone Soup With Italian Sausage certainly looks the part — the soup contains robust noodles, sausage, and a variety of veggies and beans. Nutritionally speaking, Campbell's Chunky Minestrone Soup With Italian Sausage contains 390 calories, 18 grams of fat, 1,500 milligrams of sodium (65% of the daily recommended value), and 17 grams of protein per can.

I'm having a tough time putting into words how I feel about Campbell's Chunky Minestrone Soup With Italian Sausage. One thing I adore about this soup is its heartiness and variety — there's not too little or too much of anything, as each ingredient is evenly distributed, including the meat. Even so, the meat itself was pretty off-putting — it has a strange red color to it and a weird texture that almost makes it look fake. The taste of the soup was sharp and bitter, mainly tasting of Italian herbs. I do think Campbell's Chunky Minestrone Soup With Italian Sausage would make the perfect bowl of soup for someone who tends to favor Italian fare, but because of my personal taste preferences, this bold, potently flavored soup just isn't for me.

5. Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Soup

Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Soup  isn't bad, but definitely isn't great. As expected, it contains chicken and dumplings, along with veggies like peas, carrots, and celery. Per every one can, you'll get 370 calories, 21 grams of fat, 1,930 milligrams of sodium (84% of your daily recommended value), and 16 grams of protein.

Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Soup is composed of a very thick, white, pasty sauce and is chock-full of veggies. The dumplings in the soup are of medium size, and boy, there are a lot of them! Sadly, I can't say the same of the chicken pieces — once again, Campbell's strikes out when it comes to delivering the expected amount of meat, especially given that I couldn't find a single piece of chicken in the can.

One thing Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Soup does have going for it is its taste — it was rich, creamy, and flavorful just as it should be. Nevertheless, my taste buds couldn't help but miss the chicken pieces in the mix; thus, Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Soup, though technically tasty, ranked lower than I had hoped it would.

4. Campbell's Chunky Buffalo-Style Chicken Mac Soup

Campbell's Chunky Buffalo-Style Chicken Mac Soup is an interesting take on Campbell's soup that contains jumbo elbow mac noodles, chicken, peppers, Buffalo flavor, and cheese. As you probably could guess, this Campbell's variety is very calorie-dense, with 480 calories, 23 grams of fat, 1,720 milligrams of sodium (75% of your daily recommended value), and 17 grams of protein per can.

Campbell's Chunky Buffalo-Style Chicken Mac Soup tasted so much better than I was expecting, and for that I'm truly grateful. Once opened, the soup appeared curdled on the top, but after a good stir, became smooth and velvety, similar to Velveeta-style mac and cheese. Its taste was very distinct — I'd liken it to an amped up store-bought queso with a hint of Buffalo sauce.

Keep in mind that Campbell's Chunky Buffalo-Style Chicken Mac Soup is quite spicy, and certainly has enough kick that it might prove bothersome to little kids. All in all, Campbell's Chunky Buffalo-Style Chicken Mac Soup was an underdog flavor for me — those who dig unique, cheesy, or queso-like flavors will likely love this interesting Campbell's "soup" mashup.

3. Campbell's Chunky Hearty Bean and Ham Soup

I wouldn't say Campbell's Chunky Hearty Bean and Ham Soup is the best I've ever had, but it certainly is one of the better Campbell's options on the market. The soup comes with 340 calories and 3.5 grams of fat, and 17 grams of protein per can — you can also expect a hefty amount of sodium, at 1,720 milligrams (nearly 75% of your recommended daily value).

Campbell's Chunky Hearty Bean and Ham Soup has a very smoky, gratifying flavor — the ham bites are tender, and its pea beans (also known as navy beans) are soft without being too mushy. There are a few veggies thrown into the mix, including celery and carrots, and the consistency of the soup is of medium thickness.

It's Campbell's Chunky Hearty Bean and Ham Soup's flavor that sets it apart; its smoky taste doesn't come off as overwhelming or artificial. I love the contrasting texture of the tender ham with the softness of the beans — it's definitely giving sweater weather vibes. Of course, I was frustrated by the lack of ham, but do I even have to say that at this point? Overall, I would definitely buy Campbell's Chunky Hearty Bean and Ham Soup again.

2. Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup

Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup caught me off guard, but in the best way. It features all the ingredients the original Campbell's Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup contains, only this time there's a kick of chile pepper extract to help amp up the flavor. Per can, Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup has 280 calories, 8 grams of fat, 1,700 milligrams of sodium (74% of your recommended daily value), and 16 grams of protein.

Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup is an amazing Campbell's soup offering I didn't think I'd love. Like the classic variety, Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup features robust ingredients, but it's the addition of chile pepper extract that really causes the soup to stand out. Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup provides warm spicy heat that complements the taste of the broth without impeding its natural flavors. Its gentle spice would make for the perfect companion on an icy winter morning or when looking to clear out any pesky mucus still lingering after being sick.

If you're a lightweight when it comes to heat, I'd say Campbell's Chunky Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup is still worth exploring. I myself can't tolerate very spicy foods, but the heat featured here, I think, is still tame enough for most people to enjoy.

1. Campbell's Chunky Jazzy Jambalaya Soup

Campbell's Chunky Jazzy Jambalaya Soup is the one to get if you're looking for a soup packing loads of flavor. This Louisiana-inspired offering boasts a number of ingredients including ham, sausage, chicken, celery, rice, and more. Nutritionally, expect 310 calories per can, 8 grams of fat along with 1,700 milligrams of sodium (74% of your recommended daily value), and 17 grams of protein.

Campbell's Chunky Jazzy Jambalaya Soup is chock-full of bold Cajun flavor, and was one of the few varieties that I didn't feel needed more salt. It tasted like a tamed-down version of a stew my Louisiana-born grandmother makes; not the same, of course, but considering that this soup is canned, it comes pretty darn close. I also love the amount of heat it emits — the spice is complementary without being too intense.

Bear in mind that Campbell's Chunky Jazzy Jambalaya Soup is made up primarily of rice and contains only a few pieces of smoked sausage and ham. And though the description on the can claims the soup includes chicken, I didn't see any — not even a single piece. Ah, well. Despite its flaws, I still found Campbell's Chunky Jazzy Jambalaya Soup one of the best on the market. What makes it my favorite Campbell's soup on this list is its subtle heat and combination of classic Cajun flavors.

Methodology

The Campbell's soup flavors featured in this article are representative of the ones available at the retailer nearest me. Each variety was roughly the same size (at approximately 18.6 to 18.8 ounces each) and was sold for the same price of about $2.99 per can. The soups were ranked primarily on flavor, but other factors, including consistency, overall texture, and even distribution of ingredients, were considered. As always, pricing and availability are subject to change.
