The Boston Restaurant That Served Guy Fieri An Unforgettable Pastrami Sandwich

Guy Fieri has been around America and tried many of the absolute best foods the country has to offer, so when he says one dish stands high above the rest, it means quite a bit. When it comes to high-end pastrami sandwiches, Fieri says Sam La Grassa's in downtown Boston does it best. "Sam La Grassa has been making masterpieces for over 40 years," Fieri praised in an episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" back in 2009.

Now, the "Triple D" host is known for his appreciation of many restaurants that specialize in classic dishes and cuisines across the country (La Scarola in Chicago is a great example of one of Fieri's favorite Italian restaurants). In fact, Fieri even refuses to showcase restaurants he stops at while filming "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" if he considers them to be duds. Thus, beyond Sam La Grassa's having some good sandwiches, what really sets the restaurant apart is its unique spin on the pastrami sandwich itself. More specifically, Fieri gave Sam La Grassa's Chipotle Pastrami a try when he paid the establishment a visit, calling the sandwich "killer" and complimenting the long process of crafting it.

How does Sam La Grassa's make its signature Chipotle Pastrami sandwich?

Sam La Grassa's has prided itself on experimentation with its beloved sandwiches, and while there are several major fan favorites, Guy Fieri's visit verified that the Chipotle Pastrami is the king of the menu. The sandwich is made using pastrami that is cooked in pastrami stock, water, and brown sugar before being topped with more brown sugar that soaks into the meat for a sweet touch. The stock is continually partially rotated, essentially creating "stock that is 40 years old,"  Sam La Grassa remarked in the episode.

From there, the restaurant creates a homemade chipotle mustard and homemade coleslaw, both of which are added alongside Swiss cheese and pastrami on an Italian roll that is grilled after the sandwich is compiled. Fieri called attention to each of his favorite details about the sandwich, from the sweetness that came from the brown sugar to the tang of the coleslaw. However, one thing stood above the rest for the legendary celebrity chef. "The kicker, chipotle mustard, really nice heat, not overdone," Fieri remarked. "I was worried it was going to be too much of the flavor."

Beyond featuring some of the best pastrami in the world, Sam La Grassa's also has countless other high-end dishes worth giving a shot. During his trip to the restaurant, Fieri was incredibly impressed with its clam chowder. While the Boston eatery didn't place on our list of the best restaurants for clam chowder in New England, the soup is well-liked by many who have given it a try. The restaurant also specializes in chicken sandwiches, roast beef sandwiches, and, of course, an array of other incredible pastrami sandwiches for customers to enjoy.
