In some ways, cooking is like making a movie or putting on a show. You have your stars — proteins, veggies, and starches who lead the way. As important as they are, every dish needs its supporting players such as sauces and spices. Let's not forget condiments. One of the most commonly used in a variety of ways is mayonnaise. Sometimes thought of as bland, mayo can add so much to sandwiches, salads, and other dishes. Naturally, like any other ingredient, you would prefer to use mayo of high-quality. Making homemade mayo is easy. But you may not have the time to do so in your busy life. So off to the grocery store you go. But which ones are the good brands?

We previously brought you a guide to the store-bought mayonnaise brands, ranked from worst to best. This time, we skipped the worst and dug up nine brands that are made with high-quality ingredients (prices are as of the date of publication, and may vary based on region). They are healthy, (or as healthy as mayo can be), have a nice texture, and taste good. Some are very well-known, others a bit more obscure. Each one is worthy of consideration for your next recipe calling for mayonnaise.

Primal Kitchen

Primal Kitchen is a relatively new brand, having been founded in 2015. It makes an avocado oil mayo (around $8.50 on Amazon) that has just seven ingredients,  including cage-free eggs, and of course, avocado oil, which provides healthy fat. There is no sugar of any kind, nor corn syrup, nor artificial sweeteners, which is what you want in a quality mayo product. The brand is dedicated to making high-quality condiments, dressings, and sauces from natural ingredients.

Along with healthy, natural ingredients, taste and texture are important elements. What good is mayo if you don't enjoy eating it? Primal Kitchen has plenty of fans. The Social Nature website shows more than 3,400 five-star reviews, along with over 1,300 four star. One happy customer summed it up with, "Tried this in a chicken salad as well as a sandwich as I feel like these are the most mayo heavy things you can have and it had an amazing taste and really added a flavor to both of the meals! it was a wonderful healthy option." Other reviewers praised the flavor and texture, as well as how fresh the organic ingredients felt. One commenter paid Primal Kitchen the ultimate compliment, "Rich, smooth, and tastes like homemade."

Sir Kensington's Avocado Oil Mayo

You might expect a mayo with a name straight out of "Downton Abbey" to be a high-quality product, and you would be right. Sir Kensington's also uses avocado oil. The noble the mayo was named after doesn't exist, but the dedication to quality does. In addition to avocado oil, Sir Kensington's uses certified cage-free egg yolks, distilled vinegar, water, salt, as well as lime oil and lime juice concentrate for some added brightness. That's it. No sweeteners, natural or artificial. The mayo is Non-GMO and humane certified. It's just a natural product that many people really like.

The Sir Kensington's website has plenty of five-star reviews posted by very happy shoppers, one of whom said, "This healthier alternative to mayonnaise is great. I can enjoy this knowing it has avocado oil, a good healthy fat ..." Amazon (which sells the mayo for around $10.99) shows plenty of positive reviews as well. One commenter called it, "Great for clean eating," and also said, "Sir Kensington's avocado oil mayo is in a league of its own." Many other reviewers rave about the all natural ingredients and like that this mayo brand is healthier than many others. One took the time to post a video on Amazon stating her preference for Sir Kensington's.

365 Organic Mayo

Whole Foods has its own brand (365) and sells many foods. The 365 Organic mayo is another quality product that has plenty of fans. Its ingredients are certified organic and include cage-free eggs, distilled vinegar, expeller pressed canola oil, lemon juice, and rosemary extract. There's no artificial flavorings, sweeteners, or preservatives. This mayo lives up to Whole Foods' reputation for healthy, quality products. In fact, the grocery store bans over 300 ingredients from its shelves. That is a serious commitment. So do people like it?

Facebook comments for 365 organic mayo tell quite a tale. Customers like the taste and texture and also find the price reasonable. Over on Amazon (where the mayo costs around $5), 68% of more than 11,000 reviews are five star. One reviewer states, "Tastes fine and appreciate that it is soy-free and organic." Another also praised the brand, saying, "I appreciate 365 Organic has the customers' health in mind and not their profit." Many other happy customers added their positive comments, with one calling it the best mayo with no soy in the entire nation. 365 organic mayo has certainly earned a place on our list.

Hellman's

Bring out the Hellman's and bring out the best: So goes the adverting slogan of what is almost certainly the best known brand of mayonnaise. The label on the jar, which costs around $5.50 on Amazon, says, "real" mayonnaise — and judging by the ingredients, Hellman's lives up to that standard. The brand uses cage-free eggs and responsibly-sourced oils. Additionally, it contains distilled white vinegar and lemon juice for added flavor and a pop of acidic brightness. Hellman's also has strict quality control and sources ingredients diligently. You don't last as long as this brand has without doing something right.

The Hellman's website shows a rating of 4.4 stars based on nearly 5,000 reviews. One satisfied customer declared, "You cannot beat Hellman's mayo, it's a classic and goes with everything!" Other reviewers state being long time users of Hellman's and praise its freshness and flavor. Another commenter said they liked the consistent quality.

Perhaps the highest praise of all comes from a culinary legend: Julia Child herself could not hide her love for this iconic mayo brand. It's one thing to create a bold slogan and quite another to reach that level as effectively as Hellman's has done for decades.

Chosen Foods

Our next mayo doesn't have the long history of Hellman's, but it does have the commitment to quality. Chosen Foods displays a mission statement on its website, that reads, "We're on a mission to do good in the world by being good for the world, replacing bad fats with the good fats of 100% Pure Avocado Oil across the kitchen pantry." Founded in 2011, the company has lived up to that stated goal in is 100% pure avocado oil mayo.

The ingredients are all high-quality. Chosen Foods mayo contains organic whole eggs and egg yolks, filtered water, organic distilled white vinegar, organic mustard and rosemary extract, and of course, avocado oil. The product is certified non-GMO, gluten-free, and has no seed oils.

On Amazon, where it costs from around $7, Chosen Food mayo has a 4.3-star rating based on almost 6,000 reviews, 74% of which are five-star. One reviewer on Amazon, with the online name, "Health conscious" called this mayo, " Delicious, healthy, tasty best mayonnaise that comes in a glass jar — NO PLASTIC." They went on to label it, "One in a million!" Other reviews used words like, creamy, tasty, fresh, and healthy. Chosen has more than earned its place on our high-quality list.

Trader Joe's Organic

Trader Joe's store has its own brand of many different kinds of food — and as it happens, it also sells its own organic mayonnaise. Costing around $4.29 a jar, Trader Joe's organic mayonnaise is made with soybean oil, but it is organic as are the egg yolks, whole eggs, white distilled vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, and ground mustard. Some water and salt complete the list of natural ingredients that contains no sweeteners, artificial or otherwise. It a pretty healthy and high-quality recipe that many customers enjoy. The Healthy Food Guide scores Trader Joe's organic mayo an 80 out of 100 for food integrity, which is considered a high score.

The food website, Spoonful describes it thus, "Trader Joe's organic mayonnaise is highly regarded by consumers for its exceptional taste and high quality. People appreciate the delicious flavor it adds to their meals and consider it to be a top-notch product. This organic mayonnaise is known for its premium quality, satisfying the discerning palates of those who value a superior culinary experience." A customer posted a TikTok video titled, "The best mayo at Trader's Joe's" and they chose the organic, showing the label and commenting, "As you can see, all clean simple ingredients."

Follow Your Heart Original Vegenaise

Many people these days follow a vegan lifestyle. Since it's made with eggs, vegans don't get to enjoy mayonnaise. Or do they? Vegan mayo exists, and one of the best brands is Follow Your Heart Original Vegenaise. The mayo is made with high-quality organic ingredients and is completely dairy free. Expeller-pressed canola oil, organic brown rice syrup, apple cider vinegar, soymilk powder, mustard flour, and lemon juice concentrate combine to make this tasty, healthy mayo. In addition to being certified vegan, it's also non-GMO. There are plenty of vegans, and perhaps non-vegans, too, who like this mayo.

On Amazon, where it costs around $9.99, it has a 4.9 out of five stars rating based on almost 3,500 reviews. One customer called it, "Creamy and versatile" and said it, "won me over with its rich flavor and smooth texture." Another reviewer praised the fact that there is no cholesterol. Another stated, "The biggest compliment is that my non-vegan friends and family never notice the difference. I've had people ask for recipes without realizing it was completely plant-based." Vegan food has come a long way and Follow Your Heart seems to be at the front of the pack.

Kewpie Mayonnaise

Kewpie has a century of mayonnaise manufacturing behind it, having originated in Japan in 1925. If you watch cooking shows, you have likely seen celebrity chefs using Japanese mayonnaise, and thanks to Kewpie, it is manufactured and sold in the U.S. The brand utilizes high-quality ingredients and only uses cage-free egg yolks for richness and bold flavor. It has no corn syrup, no preservatives, and no artificial colors or flavors. In addition to the yolks, Kewpie adds distilled vinegar, diluted rice vinegar, white balsamic vinegar, and cider vinegar. These natural products contribute to its unique flavor. Kewpie mayo also has a wide variety of culinary uses, from sauces to sushi.

Amazon, where it costs around $9.99, shows a 4.5-star rating based on just over 2,600 reviews, with 78% being five-star. One happy Kewpie user stated firmly, "Never going back to regular mayo." Another reviewer doled out high praise, saying, "This brand of mayo is the absolute best on the market. I purchase this for sushi, but use it on anything I would mayo. I don't why or what they do that makes it so much better, but it truly is more rich and creamy." We get more than just good cars from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Duke's

Southern cuisine is delicious and varied with staples such as biscuits and gravy, grits, and fried chicken. When it comes to condiments, most folks in Dixie prefer Duke's mayo. Not sure if they're true, but I've heard rumors that if you use Hellman's in some counties down South, you can be prosecuted, or at least ostracized. In general, Southern foods are not known to be all that healthy, but Duke's does use quality ingredients. The mayo is made with pasteurized egg yolks, cider and distilled vinegar, paprika, and soybean oil. It's not up to the level of some of the other mayo brands on our list, but it has no added sugar and no trans fat.

A blogger on the America's Test Kitchen site did a blind taste test of Duke's versus Hellmann's. Of the results, they said, "But one tentative lick was all it took: Hellmann's retained the balanced, bright flavor I recognized but ultimately lacked much depth. I couldn't picture slathering it on my BLTs or dipping my fries in it like I do with Duke's." It is now available in stores outside the South, but you can also get it on Amazon for around $5, where it has better than 5,000 reviewers who combine for a 4.6-star rating. Many of these customers praise the texture and flavor and have made it their go-to mayonnaise.

Methodology

When determining whether a food product is high-quality, it makes sense to go straight to the manufacturer's website. There, we can find the ingredients list, as well as the company's philosophy, values, and mission statement. These can give us a full picture of the product. Food bloggers and writers are an excellent source, too. They try out these mayonnaise brands in many different kinds of recipes and communicate their results. This further lets us know about the quality of the mayo.

Consumers may not be professional chefs, but they know what they like, and these days, there are many people who are concerned about healthy and quality foods. They are discerning shoppers and cooks, and their reviews are very helpful when choosing the best quality mayos for our list.

Now that you know which brands are the high-quality ones, just be sure to avoid making mayonnaise mistakes such as using too little or going overboard with it. Go forth with your new-found knowledge, and make some tasty meals for family and friends.
