The Aldi Self-Checkout Mistake That Will Slow Everyone Down

For many Aldi shoppers, the self-checkout lanes improve each of their visits — reducing friction and making their trips more efficient. Unfortunately, if you commit this blunder, you're messing up this time-saving opportunity; you cannot pay with cash at the self-checkout kiosks. If you scan all your items and attempt to do so, an employee is going to have to void the transaction, and then you'll need to move all of your stuff over to a standard lane.

Long lines when paying for their groceries are one of the things people hate about shopping at Aldi, and you're making that situation even worse by tapping an already busy employee to fix your mistake. Suffice it to say, not paying attention to the no-cash rule at Aldi self-checkouts is bad for you, workers, and anyone else trying to purchase groceries at the same time. If you prefer to pay with tangible dollars and cents, cash is indeed accepted at Aldi stores — you'll just have to wait in line so a cashier can complete the transaction.

Aldi self-checkout tips

Aldi stores are short-staffed by design. The chain pays comparatively higher wages to incentivize productivity but ultimately saves money on labor by hiring fewer employees. These savings are passed to shoppers and are evident in the best deals at Aldi, but the lean staffing also means someone might not be immediately available to help with self-checkout problems.

For example, while Aldi self-checkouts do accept SNAP funds (just swipe your EBT card like a standard credit card, and the eligible purchases are automatically deducted), some employees have noticed that customers still encounter issues. If unsure about the process, it's best to go through a standard line. As for gift cards, these must be used with a cashier and are not accepted at self-checkouts.

Live cashiers also need to handle discount stickers. The scannable barcodes are not coded with the discount, and the reduction requires manual confirmation. If you're stocking up on many discounted items, head to a regular line. At the self-checkout, you can press the "help" button, and a cashier will come over when they're able, but you may have to wait.

Speaking of that handy "help" button, use it rather than yelling for a staff member or walking up to a cash register. If you need an ID check, for example, the bell to alert an employee won't ring until you hit "Finish & Pay." Here's another word of advice from an Aldi employee on Reddit: "If you press the help button and it stops ringing/the help screen clears but the cashier doesn't come right to you, we know you need help and will be with you ASAP, or we already resolved the issue from the attendant station."
