Last Call: Hard Hats Off To A Female-Forward Home Renovation Show

HGTV’s Good Bones

As frustrated as we sometimes are with our current non-fancy, pre-renovation homestead, my 5th-grade son and I love home improvement shows on HGTV. There's something so gratifying about seeing homes much worse than ours getting glam, modern makeovers. Right now he's undecided on whether he wants to be an architect, realtor, or a rehabber when he grows up, and honestly I'd be happy with any of those options. So we spend a lot of time on the HGTV channel, where I'm pretty sure he'd like to be both Property Brothers. But right now our favorite show is Good Bones, in which mother and daughter Karen Laine and Mina Starsiak renovate houses to improve the landscape of their hometown of Indianapolis. As they're gifted at running crews, designing homes, and even decorating them afterward, they've got that multi-pronged career my son is looking for. Plus it's great for him to see a pair of women rule the roost on these types of shows for once. [Gwen Ihnat]

The fashions of Wild, Wild Country

Anyone else out there started watching the Netflix docuseries Wild, Wild Country? The show is about a utopian cult in the Oregon desert, but what I fixated on most as I watched was how damn chic all the cult members look! I know I'm not crazy—well, I might still be—because NY Mag's The Cut agrees that monochrome orange robes, beads, no bras, and dewy skin are a solid look. [Kate Bernot]

Van Morrison and Sinead O’Connor perform “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You”

I actually remember watching this on Letterman the night this aired, and I haven't forgotten about it since. The combination of a plastered Van Morrison and a charming Sinead O'Connor makes this one of my all-time favorite late-night musical performances. [Kevin Pang]
