Hummus Milkshakes Are Coming, And We're... Fine With It?

Go into a Hummus & Pita Co. this afternoon and whisper "Can I shake it up?" to an employee. You could also say the 'secret phrase' at a normal volume, presumably, but it'll be more fun if you whisper. Regardless, let loose the magic words, and you'll be able to get a little sneak preview of the very latest in hummus-related innovations. Wait until May 13, and the magic words won't matter. You can just say "Can I have one of those hummus shake things, please?"

That's when, according to Hummus & Pita Co. founder Dave Pesso, the chain will roll out the Hummus Shake, which is, as you might suspect, a shake made out of hummus. As reported by Insider, the creations will come in several different flavors, including strawberry, chocolate, pistachio, and butter pecan.

To be specific, the shake isn't made out of hummus, as though you take a container of Sabra and scoop it into a blender or something. Per Insider:

Pesso was inspired to make the Hummus Shake because he was curious to see if he could make a hummus-based drink that tastes delicious and is also vegan. For about a year, he tweaked the recipe. At last, he has perfected the formula.

Made out of chickpeas, tahini, frozen bananas, dates, almond milk, and a little pinch of pure vanilla and cinnamon, the Hummus Shake is an all-natural vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free treat that boasts many health benefits, including high amounts of protein and fiber.

We at The Takeout stumbled onto this news, and our general reaction was something along the lines of, "well, that sounds... like something we're ambivalent about." Before you add garlic or red peppers or pine nuts, ground-up chickpeas don't have a particularly aggressive flavor, so the thought of adding bananas and dates and chocolate isn't entirely off-putting. If you try one, let us know. Otherwise, we'll have to continue to be ambivalent until Hummus & Pita Co. expands to our neck of the woods.
