Hey Jason Segel, Is A Hot Dog A Sandwich?

Jason Segel has been collecting admirers since he was a teenager playing a teenager on one-season, cult favorite TV show Freaks And Geeks. He went on to star in the long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother and popular movies that some people might know by heart (guilty) like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets. Turning his attention from the screen to the page, Segel released a virtual reality-themed YA novel last year—Otherworld—and has just come out with the sequel, Otherearth. In between stops on his latest book tour, Segel spoke to The Takeout to answer this world's most important question.

The Takeout: Is a hot dog a sandwich?

Jason Segel: Oh, what a great question. I love sandwich-related questions. I'm gonna say that a hot dog is not a sandwich because one side of the bun is closed.

TO: So just because it's sealed, it's not a sandwich?

JS: A sandwich is two pieces of bread, I think. If someone presents me with an open face sandwich, I cannot consider it a sandwich.

TO: Like a Hot Brown in Kentucky, or avocado toast.

JS: Yeah, it's a worthwhile dish in its own right, but if I'm not picking it up with two hands, I don't know if it's a sandwich.

TO: But you do pick up a hot dog with one hand or two hands...

JS: Yeah, but it's just one piece of bread really.

TO: Fair enough.
