Last Call: Big Ups To The Under-Appreciated Edge Of Tomorrow

The Brewers Association—a trade group that administers the Great American Beer Festival awards each year—made a big splash in the beer-dork world yesterday with its announcement of official categories for hazy IPAs, double IPAs and pale ales. The Music Box theater here in Chicago is having a Steven Spielberg sci-fi festival in honor of Ready Player One. My family is heading out to Minority Report tonight, and I may try to stay for War Of The Worlds. But it reminds me that my favorite Tom Cruise sci-fi movie (doesn't everybody have one?) is the lamely titled Edge Of Tomorrow, directed not by Spielberg but by Doug Liman. It's an action movie Groundhog Day in which Cruise gets caught in a time loop and has to keep reliving the same day to defend Earth from invincible aliens. Besides the enjoyment of seeing Tom Cruise get killed over and over again, there's Emily Blunt as a powerhouse army instructor and a pretty riveting story. Check it out if you haven't already; it will fit the bill whether you are a Cruise fan or foe. [Gwen Ihnat]
