A Dunkin' Donuts Offered Free Food To Anyone Who Reported Staff Not Speaking English

A few months back, an Albertsons supermarket in San Diego was sued for a policy that prevented its employees from speaking Spanish around non-Spanish-speakers, even including break time and conversations with Spanish-speaking customers. And recently a Manhattan lawyer found himself the focus of public protest after he railed at a grocery store manager because he heard an employee speaking Spanish. Apparently learning nothing from these previous incidents, the manager of a Dunkin' Donuts in Baltimore posted a flyer that promised a voucher for free coffee and pastry to any customer that heard a Dunkin' Donuts employee shouting in a language other than English and narced on that employee with a phone call.

As WBAL-TV in Baltimore points out, the sign soon went viral, with a variety of media outlets calling it "racist" and "xenophobic." Dunkin' Donuts subsequently released the following statement: "The franchise owner has informed us that the sign was posted by their general manager based on her own judgement to ensure those standards are being met. While her intent was to address a customer service and satisfaction issue, the franchisee determined her approach was inappropriate and confirmed the sign has been removed."
